Amazon Opens a Virtual Medical Clinic for their Employees

FACTS

  • Amazon’s employees in Seattle, subscribers of their health plan, will be the first to have access to their latest pilot project: a virtual clinic.
  • Thie Amazon Care concept is especially intended for Amazon employees. It features telemedicine and in-person services with a team of nurse practitioners: if an appointment must be made, they can visit patients at home.
  • Services include:
    • Medical appointments (telemedicine) with physicians or other medical practitioners able to provide them with customised advice, diagnostics and prescriptions.
    • Solution for ordering medications (to be delivered by courier or picked up at a pharmacy).
  • Amazon Care is available from a mobile app, a dedicated website and even via chat from 8AM to 9PM on week days and from 8AM to 6PM on weekends.

CHALLENGES

  • Aiming at the healthcare sector. Amazon targets an industry worth $3,250 billion in the US. With Amazon Care, they are trialling technical assistance solutions likely to be applied to other targets later on.
  • Improving access to healthcare services. Amazon commits to helping their employees benefit from the best possible healthcare support.
  • Addressing the issue of sick leaves. This option also appears as a strategic launch for the group, enabling them to anticipate or prevent sick leaves, while respecting their employees’ privacy via a partnership with a non-Amazon-linked legal subsidiary, Oasis Medical.

MARKET PERSPECTIVE

  • Amazon Care becomes a reality after six months of rumours. The Web giant is running pilot tests for now but confirms their ambition to address the healthcare market.
  • also launched a health-dedicated voice-based chatbot in 2018, and said that their foray into this industry would be relying on technological solutions.
  • American Web giant has also been featuring healthcare services for their employees: Apple. Fitbit, for their part, designed “Care” for health institutions and companies.
